The art of the face oil

Sahara Smith

Why a few drops of the right oil make dry skin softer, and how to press it in so it never feels greasy.
Start with the basics
Good skin starts with the basics: a gentle cleanse, enough water, sleep and sunscreen every morning. Add one treatment at a time, so you can see what works.
Choose what fits your day
Light gels suit oily skin, richer creams suit dry skin, and oils suit almost everyone at night. The best product is the one you enjoy using every day.
- Apply from the thinnest texture to the thickest.
- Patch-test anything new on your inner arm.
- Give a new routine four to six weeks.

Listen to your body
Notice how your skin feels after cleansing, whether it is tight or calm by the afternoon, and how it looks in daylight. Those are the signs that tell you it is working.
Small, steady habits beat a shelf full of products.
Ask when unsure
If your skin is very reactive or you are under a dermatologist's care, ask them first. We are happy to help you read a label too.
